This month’s Chicago Red Bull Sound Select show featured local hip-hop and soul artists artists Mykele Deville, Pell, and BJ The Chicago Kid and was held at Chop Shop & 1st Ward. It was my first time checking out the venue and the artists, and it was pretty darn fun.
So, although I was already planning to attend this show after work, a member of Red Bull Sound Select team handling the event so graciously reached out to me (how, tho) and I was given the opportunity to check out the show with media access. I’d been to several of these Red Bull Sound Select shows at this point, and I was of course so excited to experience it from another perspective.
The place was super easy to find and had a really cool setup the moment I walked strutted in: just enough lighting and everyone was in a really positive mood. Guitar picks suddenly became currency for artist-inspired cocktails like the “Cupid’s Kiss” or “Pell Yeah” – all of which featured Red Bull flavors.

There were plenty of photo ops at the digital booths, and the entire place smelled amazing because there was a DIY flower-arrangement set-up: complete with an assortment of fresh flowers and vases for us to choose from.
I was able to chat a bit with the artists, and also get to know a few of the other people there to cover the event as well – good times! I pretty much had no expectations coming in, had no idea what I was doing, and suddenly had access to the stagefront during the first FOUR songs of each performers’ set…
Shout outs to the opening DJ who was on it! If anyone knows who that was can you please let me know? He really set the mood for the night and would love to catch him around town!
With that said, I’m happy to share a few highlights from the night!
