GRIMES PREMIERES “VENUS FLY” MUSIC VIDEO
FEATURING JANELLE MONÁE
Last week, Canadian producer and singer Claire Boucher – better known as Grimes – released her epic music video short film for her high-octane hit “Venus Fly”, from 2015’s well-received Artangels record.
The song and video feature singer (and now 2-time Academy Award-nominated actress) Janelle Monáe, and I’ve never felt so much strong, female, kick-ass energy coming from one place at one time. This collaboration really took us all for a loop 2 summers ago when Artangels dropped, and I’m glad she chose to share with us her vision for this particular song.
No to jump to conclusions but I feel like this is set to be one of the best videos of 2017. It’s easily my favorite video from Grimes so far, and I can’t remember the last music video that gave me chills. Like, ART chills. My jaw was on the floor throughout the entire piece and you can tell a lot of time went into this production – with Grimes playing the roles of both editor AND director of the video.
Is there anything she can’t do?
The day of the video’s release, Grimes spoke about the project in an Instagram post – noting it’s high quality and that it’s designed “for 4K viewing so that’s prob the best way to watch“.
About the video concept, Grimes said:
i put my whole heart and soul into this project; conceptualized, directed, edited, coloured and post-prod, nearly destroying my computer in the process lol. I hope y’all can feel the love and i hope this video takes u to a trippy alternate dimension where giant humanoid eva’s play w bubbles made of what i imagine the christofilos effect looks like ( trapped charged particles along magnetic lines of force ). it is most assuredly not a realistic depiction, it’s just a vision i’ve had in my mind for a while since i began studying the cold war earlier this year.
Some of my favorite scenes are these dream-like, slow-motion sequences of both Grimes and Monáe – just existing within these other-wordly dimensions they’ve created and looking like superheroes from a fantasy world. The detail that goes into everything Grimes puts out just blows me away and this video was no different.
BLOWN AWAY. LOVED IT. Can’t picture a better video for the song.
DO YOU SEE THIS?
I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO LOOK FIRST…
And in case you weren’t impressed – those were all REAL BUBBLES created by “bubbleologist” Teena Lemieux, who set bubbles on fire and filled them with smoke. This was not a special effect. Did you see the bubble in Grimes’ hand? That was crazy!!
Do yourself a favor and check out the full video for “Venus Fly”, and PLEASE make sure you sit through the end credits – you’ll thank me later!
