Princess Nokia just released an unexpected, brand new video for her song “For The Night”, in which we spend the night with her as she chronicles the feelings that come along with a satisfying, yet exhausting tour lifestyle.
The track is the second single released from her self-proclaimed emo mixtape A Girl Cried Red, which just dropped 3 weeks ago on Friday the 13th. It features a really calming beat paired with more melodic vocals from Nokia, which longtime listeners will recognize as a common thread displayed in her older work. The lyrics tell stories of traveling the world for months at a time, and the highs and lows of being away from home.

The music playing in the very beginning of the video kind of reminds me of the “Brujas” intro, and I love that her look is very reminiscent of the original “1992” era. I love the long weave, the thick brows, and the heavy lipliner so much! She reinvents herself but also references herself at the same time, because she has so many different facets to her physical appearance.
It’s apparent that the visual loosely chronicles her busy life on the road, with the entire video taking place in a moody (yet swanky) dimly hotel, intertwined with shots of Princess Nokia performing in different cities. Loving the fluorescent lighting and linear elements presented throughout the video, and there’s lots of cool effects using mirrors that are really pleasing (specifically at 1:32, where what would be a glare in the window from her lighter – is a clip from a past performance).
The quality and resolution of the shots are really clean, and adds to the intimate nature of the song and video. I love the ending so much, which kind of plays into the constant environmental changes with life on the road. You’d think form the video that she’s in a warm element and existing at night, then she opens the window and there’s nothing but snow and sunshine; love that contrast.
This was right on time because I really enjoyed seeing her perform this during the show, and was honestly not anticipating any more videos from her so soon – thanks girl!
