Literally everyone is releasing music left and right this month, and Aussie artist Flume has been no exception. As his first full-length release since 2016’s Skin, last week the experimental producer dropped a completely unexpected mixtape titled Hi This Is Flume. The 17-track mix is just under 40 minutes, and features work with artists like SOPHIE, slowthai, JPEGMAFIA and frequent collaborator Kučka just to name a few. The record is accompanied by a Jonathan Zawada-directed visual that is a breathtaking sensory overload and definitely worth a watch to really experience the attention to detail on these tracks.
The bold, vivid visualizer features Jonathan Zawada’s direction and digital imagery alongside vast landscapes, crisp automotive details, and precision shots in high definition. If that name rings a bell, it’s because Zawada also collaborated on Flume’s Skin project, creating stunning work for both the album art and live effects for the tour’s stage production.
I could go on about what would be my favorite thing about this film, but I would not really know where to start. I am in love with how the landscapes move and melt, while the distortions and manipulations mirror the glitches in each track. It’s really psychedelic at some points, with inverted, negative colors and extreme close-ups of various textures. There’s a lot of really metallic, automotive, and tactile details that you can almost feel while watching the video (like the leather on the dashboard, the oil dripping from beneath the car, or the wind blowing through the dreamcatcher hanging from the rear view mirror.) I also appreciate the different angles of how the trip is filmed, from the perspectives of the passenger, driver, backseat, and even alongside the car. And obviously the aerial drone shots are stunning!
Check out the visual in full, stream the record on it’s own – or do whatever! And one last thing: wanna see him live? He’ll be at this year’s Lollapalooza – ticket details can be found on the Upcoming Shows page! For now, check out Hi This Is Flume in full below! What’s your favorite track or moment?
