Elusive electro-producer Gesaffelstein drops a synth-heavy new single featuring a favorite and frequent collaborator – The Weeknd.
The moody, uptempo track “Lost In The Fire” premiered last Thursday exclusively during Episode 3 of The Weeknd’s Beats 1 Radio Show: “Memento Mori”. The song was played 3 different times during the mix, and honestly that was not a problem – the track is pretty damn good. If the song sounds just a bit familiar or reminiscent of something else – it may be partially due to Gesaffelstein and The Weeknd’s collaborative works on 2018’s My Dear Melancholy (“Hurt You”, “I Was Never There”).

Although my initial response to the song is positive, I will say this: “Lost In The Fire” honestly could be a bonus track on 2016’s Starboy record – am I right? I mean the production is super clean and I love that futuristic sound that we expect from them both, but I feel like I’ve heard this melody before – specifically the chorus. Maybe that’s the point and we’ll find out later? We’ll see I guess. I mean the title of the last record DID end with a comma…
Anyway – the radio show wrapped with the music video being released just days later, after endless teasers on both artists’ social media accounts. The sleek, high-definition visual plays with light and dark, contrasting textures, and mirrored reflections creating the illusion of infinite space and time.
If you thought you were going to get a true glimpse of Gesaffelstein – you’d be (kind of) wrong. As long as you don’t blink, amidst striking shots of statues and fire: you may just catch a figment of the French DJ alongside XO himself.
I am hoping this means we’re getting a new record or EP soon, but for now I’l just keep my fingers crossed because this an unexpected gift in my eyes! After you check out the new music video, make sure you watch my front row experience at Lollapalooza 2018 where The Weeknd headlined on my birthday! Enjoy!
