Now Playing: Pop 2

Pop 2 – Released December 15, 2017 by Charli XCX

Last Friday’s heavy wave of new album releases brought us Pop 2 – Charli XCX’s unexpected follow-up to early 2017’s mixtape Number 1 Angel. The high-octane, femme-friendly feels from the previous project definitely spill over into the new record, but that’s not a problem at all.

In between albums, Charli continued touring the 2017 festival circuit, collaborated with Mura Masa, and also gave us standalone hit singles “After The Afterparty” and the summertime slow-bop “Boys” (neither of which are featured on the new record.) But no stranger to keeping her fans well informed, over the past few months XCX took to her Instagram to hint at upcoming material and frequently alluded to potential collaborators on the forthcoming release.

After finally sharing the glittery A.G Cook / SOPHIE-produced track “Out Of My Head” (featuring Tove Lo and Alma) as the first official taste of the record, listeners were able to get an idea of the type of all star line-up to expect from Pop 2.

Cook’s next-level production is at it’s finest, with the record sounding like a hybrid between Number 1 Angel and 2016’s Vroom Vroom EP (also produced by SOPHIE).  I think Pop 2 is such a good follow-up to both of those releases, and it shows how seamlessly her producers work together. That climactic, pounding, 90’s pop elements and bass progression is now almost synonymous with their sound and I absolutely love it – it sounds like no one else and is full of energy.
