If you haven’t already heard: Kaytranada is the the Haitian-born, electronic DJ and producer – yet another young Canadian act blowing up the music scene. After receiving tons of positive response from his Soundcloud following, Kay released his debut 99.9% this year – and then just dropped the most creatively-titled accompanying mixtape earlier this week: 0.001%.

“You know how Disclosure makes house beats, and produces tracks, but also has the ability to put emerging artists in the spotlight? It’s like that but with a really eccentric, r&b-tinged, breakdance-culture vibe with tunes reminiscent of The Roots, Erykah Badu, and even Kurtis Blow.”

That’s what I said when someone asked me to describe Kaytranada.

Armed with an arsenal of very well-placed collaborators and features – this album is on point! It’s got a really old-school hip hop foundation but with just a touch of electronic, jazz, and even trap influences. You can really hear the inspiration in all the right places, and from all the right musicians: Little Dragon, Vic Mensa, Anderson .Paak, River Tiber, even Craig David (yes-that Craig David), and the list goes on and on…

If you have any doubts, let it be known that this album beat out fellow Canadian acts Grimes and Jessy Lanza and several artists this week for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, which went to the best album of the year by a Canadian artist. The awards ceremony was held September 19 in Ontario.

I’ll be seeing him live in less than 2 weeks, and I’m really hoping to hear some of the new mix.

If you’ve already gotten your fix of 99.9%, take a listen to it’s counterpart 0.001% now!
