GREEN LINE CHICK

In preparation for her show coming up in July, I wanted to quickly touch on one of my favorite artists at the moment – the soft-spoken yet wildly aggressive: Princess Nokia.

Destiny Frasqueri – also known as Princess Nokia (and often times “Wavy Spice”) – is an unapologetic natural beauty, with empowering messages for brown girls and a voice that can take on pretty much any style or genre of music – including rap, r&b, soul, house, and more.

In the same way that I became a much more appreciative fan of Grimes, a really incredible Fader documentary about Princess Nokia pretty much introduced me to her work. I was blown away by her story, her inspirations, and work ethic. You’d never know how much this young woman has experienced, and it truly comes out in her music.

Ultimately – I just love seeing strong women create art.

After watching this doc, I could see how her upbringing really shaped her as an artist and tireless performer. I really admire her persistence and determination to have what she wants – simply because she can and because she deserves it. Hard work can really pay off and that rings true in her journey.

Naturally, I went through all her music and videos that I could possibly find, and was really impressed by her body of work. Just like her appearance, from track to track she really takes risks and creates new and original sounds.  From “Dragons” to “Brujas”, her videos expertly display the many facets of her complex and dynamic personality as both a female and an artist.

I’m also completely obsessed with the fact that she looks almost completely different every time you see her – yet always true to her style and her vision. Her throwback looks are so on point that it literally reminds me of what my older sister wore in like, 1996.

It’s Polo, it’s Tommy, it’s Mecca, it’s Nauti
I’m finna sit back and just sip on Bacardi

She is like the 90’s hip hop looks version of what Charli XCX is to 90’s pop fashion – current, progressive, and vintage all at the same time. Princess Nokia can do no wrong when it comes to her looks.

(Get you a girl who can do both everything)

Long story short, Nokia is that shit right now and how so very gracious of her to share her latest work with us online. Check out 1992 here – and don’t sleep on her old material either; it’s amazing!

If you want to release your inner beast, you better check our her July 14 show at Bottom Lounge – it’s gonna be LIT! Tickets are selling fast so don’t be a loser and miss out on this one.

Lastly, quite possibly the best song outro on Earth:

Please do not ask me or any Black or Brown women if our hair is real or not
If it’s a wig, a weave, extensions, braids, don’t fuckin ask
It’s very rude, it’s extremely personal to be put on the spot like that
How we choose to wear our hair is our personal choice, ok?
We bought it, it’s ours, so have some manners and keep your curiosity to yourself
