Solange (obviously) topped the charts, The Weeknd won’t go away (which is fine), and Grimes comfortably pushes her artistry to the limit.
Producer/songwriter/vocalist/director/musician (wow) Grimes continues to sonically and visually stimulate us with her multiple personas, or Art Angels, in her latest video. This nearly 40 minute music film with friend and fellow singer/songwriter Hana is no different.
Filmed over the course of 2 weeks during her European Tour, with support from Hana, the video (according to Grimes) was filmed on just a cell phone. No crew, no lighting, etc – IMPRESSIVE!
You can watch the full piece, The AC!D Reign Chronicles below. It includes videos for Grimes’ “World Princess Pt 2”, “Butterfly”, “Scream”, and “Belly of the Beat”, along with Hana’s “Chimera”, “Underwater”, and “Avalanche”.
Fresh off of his recent season-opening SNL stint 2 weeks ago, the Weeknd has been really riding the wave of the momentum he’s created in the past couple of weeks – starting with that fresh and unexpected new look!
Along with this fresh look is some fresh music – with what I could call a really new sound for him. I don’t have any reason to categorize it or say it’s going into a certain direction – but I love it! It’s really invigorating and experimental, and a stark contrast from what I typically anticipate from him – which is a good change.
Title track “Starboy” was released just at the end of last month, with a to-be-expected, visually stunning video to go along with it. Starboy is slated for a November 25th release, and you can watch the previously released title track here.
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY – for now check out his latest short-film for the track “False Alarm”. It’s a gritty, high-octane, wildly-NSFW trip (shot it in the style of a first-person shooter) that seamlessly accompanies the energy of the new track. Check it out!
