Music Overload: September 7, 2019

This edition of Music Overload features females in hip-hop, interesting collaborations, new music videos and when these artists will be hitting the road. Let’s get right to it!

Rico Nasty slays #NYFW and shares (appropriately-titled) new single “Fashion Week”

https://www.instagram.com/riconasty

Have you seen these amazing looks all weekend from rapper Rico Nasty? I feel like she is really coming up right now in the high fashion game, and I have been loving the risks she’s been taking lately. Then on the other hand, you see her fresh-faced with natural, bouncy curls in the latest Vogue Beauty Secrets series and see she’s literally just as gorgeous in a bath robe! Sidenote: make sure you catch her cameo in Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer” video – out now! For now, here’s her new single “Fashion Week”.

Mura Masa Teams Up With Clairo on Unexpected, Electrifying Track “I Don’t Think I Can Do This Again”

No stranger to some incredible collaborations from the best in the game, 23-year old multi-instrumentalist and producer Mura Masa released the song and video for pulsating track “I Can’t Do This Anymore”. The song boasts vocals from electro-pop singer Clairo, and the music video features distorted moments that coincide with the song’s progression. Both trippy and entertaining! Check it out the dizzying clip here!

Grimes Shares Visually Stunning New Music Video “Violence”, A Collaboration With i_o

This new Grimes video is like, equal parts art / future / anime / fashion / evil which is what I’ve come to love about the majority of her visuals. I’m really hoping this is a taste of what to expect on the upcoming new record Miss_Anthrop0cene because I am digging the way this sounds. (No word if this is the lead single or not.) The vocals are still very, very Grimes to me, but I’ve not really heard a melody like this from her and she is emanating so much confidence in the video.

Her nails are sick, she’s dancing, there’s obviously swords, and from an aesthetic standpoint – I could watch this over and over. The shots are really hazy and glossy which feels quite heavenly and magical at the same time. Grime’s actually directed the video, so I’m not surprised it’s very “her”. The last time I felt she really went there was when she dropped “Venus Fly” back in 2017 with Janelle Monae (which is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen, actually). Check out “Violence” and let me know what you think?

Megan Thee Stallion Wraps Up The Season With Her “Hot Girl Summer” Anthem

Keep in mind: Summer isn’t actually over until Megan (or Simon) says, but she took her sweet time making sure the visual was fire and dropped the video for the bootylicious banger early this week. The track features fellow rapper Nicki Minaj, tons of cameos, and an extra-catchy hook from Ty Dolla $ign.

Man what a week for Nicki right? Featured in the video, retiring (not retiring) and then announcing her Fendi collaboration. Was it all a stunt? What do you think? Regardless, this video makes me sad that it’s already getting chilly in Chicago. It’s fine though, I’ll just continue living vicariously through Meg’s thigh strength and continue about my day…

German Pop Icon Kim Petras Announces The Clarity Tour

Ya’ll I’m late to the game, but I am here and it’s okay. Kim Petras is back on the road (already) and I may get a chance to actually catch this tour! Her debut album Clarity dropped back in June and it is literally so good (with “Broken”, “Icy”, and honestly “Clarity” being my faves).

Every ticket for this show also includes a digital download of Kim Petras’ upcoming release, Turn Off The Light, Vol 2 (which will be available October 1, 2019) She’ll be coming to Chicago’s Riviera Theatre on November 27, so get your tickets now! Here’s a taste of what to expect – go ahead and listen bop to “Clarity”!

Lil Nas X Drops Long-awaited, Futuristic Video for “Panini”

With Lil Nas X’s debut EP 7 clocking in at just short of 19 minutes – I wondered: how will he release music videos if the tracks are 2 minutes apiece? Well, after strangely obsessing over his looping visualizers for songs like “Kick It” and “Rodeo” (ft Cardi B.), I actually new that my favorite song “Panini” would be no different and he’d find a way to make this video his own.

It seems his recent MTV VMA performance was a nod to this video, which takes place in a space-age, futuristic town with neon skyscrapers and holographic visuals. The clip also stars actress Skai Jackson, who spends the entire time trying to get away from his ass. This was always my favorite song since 7 came out back in June, and I’m so proud of his success! If you like robots, levitation, and mild peril – watch “Panini” here!

Chicago’s Wingtips Release Debut Record Exposure Therapy

Whether it’s opening for other artists or their very own album release event – I’ve come to absolutely love Wingtips’ music, and try to make a point to support and listen when I can. This brand new record Exposure Therapy is absolutely no different and is literally so crisp and concise from start to finish. The album cover really evokes such a mood to me, and it honestly bleeds across their music and performances. Like, if this makes any sense – the album sounds exactly like the cover.

From track to track, I feel like there’s such a great balance between really dark, brooding, haunting moments that give way to very light, airy, vast atmospheres. I get such a nostalgic vibe when I hear songs like “Here and Now” and “Relativity”, whereas “Deaf Pursuit” could easily be from the future (like how we imagined the future, but in the past – do you get it?). Right now “The Eye That Follows Suit” and “Accidental Effigies” are on repeat and I don’t plan on slowing down. If you have time to catch their live show please do it (plus they’re supporting and touring with amazing artists as well!). Worst case scenario, you can still buy/hear the new record or watch “Deaf Pursuit” here!

Doja Cat Is Serving Us Fruit Cocktail Realness in “Juicy” Featuring Tyga

Just a friendly reminder to eat your fruits and veggies kids! Doja Cat literally takes form of your juicy faves in the cheeky visual for Juicy, featured on the newly re-released version of 2018’s Amala. The remix features Tyga, among other things:

We love a chameleon and Doja Cat really is that chick. Ever-changing and evolving, and casually, confidently parading her authenticity. I will say, this is one of her most creative videos and was truly unexpected and possibly never-been-done. Can we talk about the watermelon look?

New Single “Just Like You” from Emotional Oranges – Listen Now!

My favorite mysterious musicians Emotional Oranges have been giving us little peeks of their new music here and there lately, like sharing upcoming tracks on Instagram live and encouraging followers to receive their periodic texts with links to exclusive studio sessions. (Yes, I signed up.)

https://www.instagram.com/emotionaloranges

Anyway, “Don’t Be Lazy” was the first official “new” track after the ridiculously successful The Juice: Vol 1, but we’ve been given another song to tithe us over until their new record – I introduce to you: “Just Like You”. I seriously can’t get over how good these two vocalists sound together and this is yet another example of their consistency and clearly organic music relationship. The faceless duo are currently at the start of a massive tour, so you may just get a glimpse of the “cuties” if you’re quick. I’ll certainly be at their Chicago show, scheduled October 5 at The Metro – get your tickets here! Listen to “Just Like You”  and I dare you to not fall in love with these two.

If there’s any artist you wanna know more about (or have any to suggest), just comment and let me know! Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to follow me on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date with what’s next for me!
