Music Overload: January 14, 2018

Recently nominated for FIVE 2018 Brit Awards, UK’s empowering, pop powerhouse Dua Lipa just can’t stop releasing amazing videos from her 2017 self-titled debut album Dua Lipa.

While we alI know she’s obviously very creative with her work, I didn’t think we’d get another amazing music video so fast after the epic visual that accompanied her single “New Rules”. Well, she’s clearly got more ideas up her sleeve and she didn’t let me down with the music video for the track “IDGAF”.

The video features a minimal space-like set, with combative, explosive, interpretive moves by the all-female dancers (there’s even dueling Dua-ling Dua’s at this point.) I love the contrast in the colors, the women in relaxed power-suits, and the simplicity of the concept. Sometimes less can be more, and in what I would call a daring move for Dua (from the choreography standpoint) I really like the outcome and appreciate the song a bit more.

As her tour interlude states: “this is a song for all the fuckboys who have done you wrong.” Check out Dua’s Lipa’s new video for “IDGAF” and put your middle fingers up with the rest of us.

Meg Remy of U.S. Girls continues to push the boundaries of politically-tinged pop, and that is surely the case with the new songs and visuals associated with her upcoming sophomore record In A Poem Unlimited, set to be released on February 16th. You can pre-order it now, which includes the powerful anthems “Mad as Hell”, “Velvet 4 Sale”, and my personal favorite song and visual so far – “Pearly Gates”, which features fellow Toronto-based singer/songwriter James Baley.

Something about the video is reminiscent of my favorite video from U.S. Girls called “Window Shades”.  That was the first thing I’d ever heard from Remy, and her voice went so well with the video. Something about the way that both of the videos look invokes this haunting feeling of the past, but it’s lyrically relevant to the present. The color palette in “Pearly Gates” is soothing and warm, contrasting with the eerie imagery.

I’m only a relatively casual listener of her music, but after watching each music video from the new record, I’d be a fool not to be at the show because I loved every single one. I can’t wait to hear her live for the first time, and hopefully she will share some stories and insight about the inspiration behind the tracks and visuals. Tickets are on sale now for her upcoming Chicago date at empty bottle on April 17th.

That’ll do it for today’s #music overload, but be sure to visit me on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram for more album reviews, photos, music videos and concerts anytime. Thanks for reading! xoxo danni
