Music Overload 1/21

SO. MUCH. GOING. ON.

New albums, new videos, tour date, covers – you name it, it’s happening too fast.

THE WEEKND’S NEW VIDEO FOR “PARTY MONSTER”

Directed by Brooklyn-based production duo BRTHR -Released January 12, 2017

Let’s be serious, this is everyone’s go-to, must-listen, never-skip track off of The Weeknd’s crazy solid album Starboy. The visual definitely lives up to the high-energy single and love pretty much everything about this video. I’m also glad he just went ahead and put this video out right away while we’re all obsessing over this song!

Honestly, every video and performance from this era so far has been outstanding,  and this tour is going to be crazy. Watch the video below and let me know what you think!

Thoughts? This video surely has to make you excited for the tour. Not convinced? Check out his exclusive Vevo concert performance here!

MORE NEW MUSIC FROM GEMS

ABOUT THE TRACK:

Sometimes life pulls the rug out from under your feet and you have this sense of groundlessness, like everything is suspended in free fall. Really, we are all in free fall, all the time, but it is the moments of cataclysmic change that wake you up to the fact that there are no sure things in life. Change is the only constant. “Free Fall” is about embracing that change and hurdling forward into the unknown without regretting the past.

Alongside these new tracks every full moon (presumably leading up to an album release), all of the associated black + white imagery is so amazing – you should check out photographer Edric Chen’s beautiful work if you have a moment!

Anyway, this track is really good as expected from them – really dark and moody but also airy and light, if that makes any sense. The background vocals are really soothing and I like the really choppy loop of the “letting me go” part of the song. I’m really impressed with this second release, and I’ll be the weirdo waiting for the next full moon, I guess.

Go ahead and listen to “Free Fall” below, and check out the previous track release here!

PHANTOGRAM LIVE ON TRIPLE J

My faves were just live on Australian radio station Triple J last week, performing the first “Like A Version” of 2017. They went with Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” from 2007’s In Rainbows – what are your thoughts?

When asked why they decided to go with this song, Josh replied that Radiohead is one of their ” favorite bands and they’ve been a big influence on our music and art.”

Sarah also confirmed that several future collaborative projects are surely in the works:

“We’re going to do a whole heap-load of collabs … can’t really say with who yet.”

In addition, Josh continues to work with Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine – a project he’d spoken of a few times just last year. He also says the crew recently jammed out with Odesza in Seattle, which could definitely make for some interesting tunes.

They also made time to perform an all-new rendition of their song “Cruel World” – watch it here! And make sure you try to catch them live at one of these just-announced US tour dates!
