Kaytranada Unexpectedly Drops New Album “Bubba”

The Canadian producer and DJ finally shares his highly-anticipated follow-up to 2016’s Grammy-nominated full length album 99.9%. The new record dropped without warning (and without a lead single) just this past Thursday, and has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.

The incredible slew of big features on this record is paired with equally enticing album artwork, which features Kaytranada rocking some extremely unique contact lenses and staring into the distance. The overall vibe sonically is classic Kay, with standout cuts from the likes of Tinashe, Goldlink, VanJess, Pharrell, Kali Uchis, Masego, and many, many more. There’s a well-balanced mix of ambient, relaxing tunes and catchy uptempo tracks, with each collaborator really elevating each songs’ potential.

Musically, I find that the biggest difference between 99.9% and Bubba is that this record has more seamless transitions, in my opinion, and the sequencing is a bit more concise overall. With more than half of the tracks clocking in at about 2 and a half minutes or less, the release actually plays much more like a mixtape or DJ set, as opposed to a standard track-by-track LP. Because of this, I imagine a lesser likelihood for singles or mainstream track releases for a lot of these songs.

Favorites for me include “Taste”, “Go DJ”, “Need It”, “The Worst In Me” – and that’s just to name few. With a running time of just over 50 minutes, take a much-needed breather and check out the 17-track Bubba right here. Let me know what you think!
