Now Playing: Nightride

After listening to the full album in one go, I can definitely say that Nightride has a very laid-back tone reminiscent of her mixtape eras: a little more gritty and little less radio-friendly.

You’re not going to hear any of these songs at the club, but instead you’ll want to relax on your couch with the lights turned low. The content of the lyrics wavers between the feeling of just wanting to be alone, but wanting to feel needed by someone at the same time which is almost TOO relatable right now.

At a quick glance I was thrown off by the amount of tracks on the album, but soon read that it included a lot previously released tunes. So many of those songs (“Touch Pass”, “Company”, “Ride Of Your Life”, etc) now fit seamlessly into this body of work, whereas before the nature of the tracks felt a bit isolated as singles.

When you really break down the 15-track record (and exclude all previously heard material) Nightride‘s got 7 brand new tracks – and 3 interludes to nicely tie everything all together.

Everything I’d read and heard up until Nightride’s surprise release led me to believe that this album would be pretty good and I was absolutely right. I don’t know what the heck took me so long to buy this and I’ve not stopped listening to it yet. Even this late into the year, it’s one of the best records I’ve heard this year and she definitely outdid herself.
